How a lack of sleep and unprotected sun exposure can contribute to premature sun aging of your skin.

Sleep deprivation increases the rate at which women’s skin ages, according to a study by University Hospitals Case Medical Center, which found that women with lower sleep quality were linked to poorer and slower recovery from sun aging exposure. The study used the SCINEXA skin aging scoring system in which a higher score means the skin appears to be more aged with fine lines, uneven pigmentation, slackening of skin and reduced elasticity.

Participants who had poor quality sleep scored 4.4 and those with good quality sleep scored half that at 2.2. Researchers suggest that when women experience lack of sleep, their skin becomes more prone to environmental stressors such as sun damage. Participants who had sufficient sleep were reported to have 30 per cent higher skin recovery 72 hours post experiencing a skin stressor than those who were sleep deprived. Not surprisingly, the sleep-deprived participants also reported a significantly lower self-perception of attractiveness.

So, what can we gather from those findings? Sun protection is the best way to prevent sun aging.

Of course, protecting your skin from the sun, requires equipping your arsenal with the right products. With SkinMedica’s 100 percent mineral formulation, you can protect your skin daily from the outside elements. The spf 30+ is broad spectrum, ultra sheer, sunscreen that is applied underneath your daily makeup and removes fine lines and brown spots. Wearing sunscreen all year long is an essential part of this prevention.

However, if you haven’t yet developed this habit, don’t worry… it’s not too late.

Restore your sun-damaged skin back to it’s former glory with a CO2RE treatment. This cutting-edge technology allows for six versatile treatment modes. Four fractional ablative and pattern modes, one traditional resurfacing mode, and one excision mode. The procedures are for skin resurfacing; wrinkle and scar reduction; minor dermal incisions and excisions; and to help reduce pigmentation.

By using CO2RE technology, you’ll be joining 52 million wrinkle patients, 17 million pigmentation patients and 15 million scar patients. With predictable and proven results, the 15-minute procedure can have long-lasting benefits on not only your skin, but your self-confidence. Unlike filler or botox that only provide visible results for a few months, the benefits of laser resurfacing can last years. Not only that, but patients report mild to no discomfort during the versatile treatments CO2RE can offer.

With all of that said, here are our top 3 tips for healthy, youthful skin:

1. To ensure you get the sleep you need to naturally protect your skin from aging. Turn off all devices and set a bedtime for yourself that allows for at least seven to eight hours of sleep.

2. Keep two SkinMedica Daily Physical Defense Sunscreen bottles handy at all times. One in your makeup bag and the other in your car (just in case you forget to apply it in the morning).

3. Lastly, booking your CO2RE treatment can help give you the clean slate–or more specifically, the clean skin–you need to implement all of these healthy skin habits into your routine.
