Submentoplasty is intended for patients seeking sharper jawline definition and a more refined neck profile, particularly when genetics or aging soften the lower facial contour despite a healthy lifestyle.
What Is Submentoplasty?
Submentoplasty is a surgical procedure that recontours and reshapes the area of the neck beneath the chin by addressing the true anatomical causes of submental fullness. This fullness may result from excess skin (often referred to as a “turkey neck”), lax or hanging platysma muscle, superficial fat beneath the skin, or deeper structural contributors such as an enlarged deep fat pad, low hanging submandibular salivary glands, or prominent digastric muscles. Unlike liposuction, which only treats superficial fat, submentoplasty allows for layered correction. The procedure may involve removal of superficial fat, contouring of deeper fat, selective reshaping of muscles or glands when indicated, and tightening of the platysma muscle to reduce banding and improve definition. Often referred to as a deep neck lift, submentoplasty may be performed as a standalone procedure in appropriately selected patients or combined with facelift and neck lift surgery when broader correction is required.
