What is a lip lift?

A lip lift is a simple surgical procedure to elevate the top lip to a more aesthetically pleasing location. As the body ages, the upper lip often begins to droop, increasing the length of the philtrum. This can negatively impact the smile, interfering with your self-confidence. If fillers are injected into the top lip, it only worsens the problem by making the skin heavier.

Lip lift surgery restores balance and harmony among the features by trimming excess skin in the philtrum. It allows the upper lip to gently curl upward and reveal more of the inner lip’s feminine pink color. Tooth show is also enhanced with a lip lift.

Dr. Matthew D. Brace – A masterful approach to facial cosmetic procedures

Dr. Brace is a double-board-certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon who performs dozens of lip-related procedures each year, drawing on his extensive training, eye for detail, and unwavering commitment to safety. His masterful techniques ensure inconspicuous scarring and a nuanced, customized outcome.

Who is a candidate for a lip lift?

Candidates for a lip lift are healthy non-smokers who have realistic expectations for their results based on their private consultation with Dr. Brace and his knowledgeable, skilled team in London. They may be unhappy with the length of their philtrum due to genetics or aging. A lip lift not only increases tooth show and inner pink lip show but can also smooth lip lines, enhance lip definition, and create a more feminine look overall.

What will the procedure entail?

Lip lift surgery can be performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia. If the patient is undergoing additional cosmetic procedures such as a facelift or neck lift, then general anesthesia will be administered. On the day of your procedure, Dr. Brace will mark the treatment points with a surgical pen according to your customized treatment plan. He will then excise a small portion of skin to reduce the length of the philtrum and create a more feminine, youthful smile. Fine sutures will then be placed to close the incision. The treatment takes approximately 30-45 minutes to complete.

What can I expect from the recovery process?

Immediately after your lip lift

The upper lip will feel weighty and numb for several hours after your lip lift. Minor bruising and swelling may be present, and it may be difficult to speak or eat. You can apply ice to the treated region to help minimize discomfort and soreness.

Days 1-5 post-op

Swelling and bruising are typically at their worst during this phase of recovery but will gradually begin to fade. Upper lip function may still be impaired. You can continue to apply ice to the upper lip.

Days 6 and 7 post-op

At this point, Dr. Brace will remove any remaining sutures during your follow-up appointment and check to make sure your healing is progressing properly. Your incision may still appear red and prominent. Pursing the lips or using a straw can still be difficult.

30 days post-op

Swelling has now diminished significantly and the incision looks more pink than red. Dr. Brace will employ VBeam laser therapy and anti-inflammatory injections to reduce the appearance of your scar so that it can hardly be noticed.

60 days post-op

The incision line continues to fade away as upper lip function returns. There is almost no visible swelling at this juncture.

90 days post-op

At the 3-month mark, the upper lip now functions normally and swelling is virtually non-existent. Dr. Brace can continue to refine the scar appearance using CO2 and pulsed dye laser therapies.

Lip augmentation using dermal fillers

Dr. Brace and his team can use lip fillers to enhance your lip lift results and create the youthful smile you have always envisioned. Most lip fillers are formulated with hyaluronic acid, a biocompatible compound that increases the skin’s moisture, suppleness, and resilience. As the aging process depletes the body of its HA supply, lip fillers can bridge the gap, restoring a more alluring, sensual pout. Fillers not only increase lip volume but can also correct the lips’ color, definition, and texture. Improvements typically last from 6-18 months.
