Here is your guide to the best things to do in Guelph!

Arts, Culture & History

Guelph’s identity is rooted in its limestone architecture and a thriving arts scene.

  • The Basilica of Our Lady Immaculate (28 Norfolk St: Open 8:00AM-3:00PM): A must-visit National Historic Site. This Gothic Revival masterpiece offers some of the best views of the city from its hilltop location.
  • Art Gallery of Guelph (358 Gordan St: Open 12:00PM-5:00PM): Explore contemporary exhibitions and don't miss the Donald Forster Sculpture Park, which features over 40 installations across the grounds.
  • Guelph Civic Museum (52 Norfolk St: Open 10:00AM – 5:00PM): Dive into the city's history, located right next to the Basilica.
  • McCrae House (108 Water St: Only open Dec 1st – April 30th): Visit the birthplace of John McCrae, author of "In Flanders Fields." The award-winning gardens are particularly beautiful in the spring and summer.

Nature & Outdoors

Known for its green spaces, Guelph offers plenty of room to breathe.

  • The Guelph Arboretum (College Ave E): Spanning 400 acres next to the University. Perfect for a peaceful stroll or birdwatching.
  • Riverside Park (709 Woolwich St): A classic family destination featuring a vintage carousel, a miniature train, and floral clock.
  • Royal City Park (139 Gordon St): Royal City Park sits at the picturesque confluence of the Speed and Eramosa Rivers. It is a favorite for locals looking for a blend of recreation and relaxation without leaving the city core.
  • The Boathouse (116 Gordon St: Closed During Winter Months): Located at Royal City Park, you can grab a famous ice cream cone and rent a canoe to paddle along the Speed River.

Top Hiking & Nature Trails

  • Starkey Hill Loop (4 km): Located just outside the city on Arkell Road, this is arguably the most popular hike in the area. It features the highest point in Puslinch Township, offering a great lookout over the city and the Basilica.
  • Eramosa River Trail (4.1 km): Start at the iconic Lattice Covered Bridge near Gordon Street. This flat, crushed-stone path is perfect for an easy afternoon walk. It passes by the historic wooden bridge and leads you toward the University Arboretum.
  • Speed River Trail (3.4 km): Running from Riverside Park to Victoria Road, this trail follows the river through cedar forests. It’s peaceful, well-canopied, and excellent for birdwatching.

The Coffee & Cafe Scene

Guelph takes its caffeine seriously, with a heavy focus on fair trade, organic beans, and community-centric spaces.

  • The Red Brick Café (8 Douglas St: Open 8:00AM-5:00PM): Tucked away on Douglas Street, this is arguably Guelph’s most famous cafe. With its exposed brick, local art, and cozy mismatched furniture, it feels like a second living room. It also serves beer and wine in the evenings.
  • With The Grain (294 Woolwich St: Open 8:00AM-4:00PM): Located near Exhibition Park, this is a local legend for baked goods. Grab a fresh coffee and one of their famous muffins or a loaf of artisan bread.
  • Centurion Coffee (1027 Gordon St: Open 7:00AM-11:30PM): A clean, modern space that balances a serious coffee program with high-quality sandwiches and quiches—perfect for a lunch-and-latte combo.
  • Cavan Coffee (1467 Gordan Street: Open 07:30AM-6:00PM): Conveniently located on Gordan Street and a short drive from the clinic.
